BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The second seeded Moravian University women's lacrosse squad fell to third seed The University of Scranton, 13-10, in a hard-fought Landmark Conference Semifinal match on John Makuvek Field Wednesday evening to close out the 2023 season.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as sophomore attack Jackie Salvatore found the net just 1:41 into the contest off a pass from graduate student attack Eliza Fantazzi. The Royals answered with three goals to build a 3-1 edge. The Blue & Grey countered back with unassisted goals from senior midfielder Megan Donnelly and sophomore midfielder Alex Cherenson in the final 3:26 of the quarter to knot the score at 3-3 after 15 minutes of action
- Neither team was able to find the net through the first 10 minutes of the second quarter before Scranton scored twice to take a 5-3 lead. Salvatore hit the net again with just nine seconds left in the half to send the teams to the intermission with the Royals leading 5-4
- The Greyhounds quickly tied the contest at 5-5 just 1:19 into the second half when senior attack Devin King scored, and Moravian added goals from graduate student attack Brittany Bill and sophomore attack Madi Dippel to build a 7-5 advantage with 9:21 to go in the third quarter. Scranton countered back with four straight goals to retake a 9-7 lead before Bill scored in the final minute of the period to set the score at 9-8 for the Royals after 45 minutes of play
- Scranton quickly regained its two-goal edge just 39 seconds into the fourth quarter, and the Royals added another goal before Bill hit the net. Scranton scored twice more in the period while Donnelly tallied a marker for the Hounds
- Wednesday's match marked the fifth straight Landmark Conference Tournament that Scranton had eliminated the Greyhounds from the postseason
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had seven different players score a point with Bill netting a hat trick in her final match to go with 11 draw controls
- Salvatore and Donnelly each scored two goals with Donnelly adding a pair of draw controls while Cherenson, Dippel and King all had one goal with Dippel scooping up a pair of ground balls
- Fantazzi recorded an assist while senior midfielder Emily Hoskin contributed three ground balls. Junior defender Keara Reilly caused three turnovers while junior defender Alise Downey added a pair of ground balls
- Senior goalie Rylie Soltis recorded six saves
- The Hounds finished the match with a 34-26 advantage in shots and a 15-12 edge in draw controls while going 13-for-14 on clearing attempts
