Moravian Women Top Muhlenberg & DeSales to Improve to 5-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team won a pair of non-conference match Sunday at Hoffman Courts, defeating rival Muhlenberg College, 7-2, and topping DeSales University, 9-0, as the Hounds improved to 5-0 on the season.

In the opener versus Muhlenberg, the Greyhounds lead 2-1 after doubles action. Junior Brooke Adams and freshman Maddie Figiel came off the courts first with an 8-2 win at third doubles before the Mules tied the contest with an 8-3 score at first doubles. The tandem of junior Mary Angle and Julianne Cassady trailed 6-3 in their second doubles match before running off five straight points to earn an 8-6 triumph and put the Blue and Grey up heading into singles.

The Hounds then took five of six singles contests for the 7-2 win. Cassady made it a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles while junior Kristen Cassidy earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at fifth singles. Senior Lauren Steinert earned the winning team point with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at second singles while freshman Cristina Merone won 6-1, 6-2 at sixth singles to push the advantage to 6-1. Adams recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles for Moravian's final point.

Against DeSales, junior Emma Angle and Cassady scored first with an 8-2 win at first doubles while Cassidy and Figiel earned an 8-4 victory at second doubles. Adams and Merone pushed the lead to 3-0 with an 8-6 triumph at third doubles.

The Greyhounds then took all six singles matches in straight sets for the squad's third 9-0 win in five contests this fall. Emma Angle was off the courts first with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles while Cassady earned the winning team point with a 6-0, 6-0 match at fifth singles. Steinert posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles, and Merone followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at sixth singles. Adams finished off a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at fourth singles while Mary Angle completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at second singles.

Moravian is scheduled to close out the fall portion of its 2019-20 schedule on Saturday, October 5 when the squad heads to NCAA Division Lafayette College for a non-conference contest beginning at 12:00 p.m.
