Softball Win Streak to 6; Novak Tosses No-Hitter vs. Bates

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian College softball team softball team extended its winning streak to six games with a pair of victories at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida Thursday evening with a 1-0 victory over SUNY Oneonta and an 8-0, five-inning triumph versus Bates (Maine) College behind the first career no-hitter by freshman hurler Josie Novak.

In the opener versus SUNY Oneonta, the Greyhounds scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore left fielder Julie Siragusa reached on catcher's interference to start the inning. Freshman Megan Taylor was hit by a pitch and junior Lindsay Sullivan hit an infield single to load the bases. After a fielder's choice retired Siragusa at the plate, sophomore catcher Niki Maffettone connected on an RBI single up the middle to score Taylor with what would be the winning run. Moravian had six hits in the game.

Freshman Amanda Carisone picked up her third consecutive win on the circle, scattering three hits and walking none to go with seven strikeouts.

Novak allowed just a walk while striking out seven in her first no-hitter against Bates, the 34th no-hitter in school history.

At the plate, the Greyhounds scored eight runs with just two hits but the Hounds used seven walks, three hit batters and a pair of errors in the victory.

The Blue & Grey scored five times in the top of the fourth inning. Junior right fielder Mary Schlosbon led off with a single, and she scored the first run of the game on an error with the bases loaded. Taylor drove in a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while freshman catcher Janae Matos connected on an RBI sacrifice fly. Sophomore third baseman Chrissy Marinaro had an RBI ground out while Schlosbon drove in the final run of the frame with a bases loaded walk.

The Greyhounds tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning for the NCAA eight-run rule. Sophomore third baseman Victoria Conner had an RBI on an error that would score two runs while sophomore shortstop Lizzie Deutsch added an RBI single for the final run of the game.

Moravian will complete its trip to the National Training Center on Friday, March 13 with games against Westfield State (Mass.) College at 9:00 a.m. and Haverford College at 1:00 p.m.
