George Helps Hounds Extend Winning Streak to 8 in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. --- Senior center fielder Dior George was 4-for-8 at the plate over two games and gave the Moravian College softball team the lead in both contests as the Greyhounds ran their winning streak to eight games with a 4-1 win over Westfield State (Mass.) College and a 1-0, eight-inning victory over Haverford College to close out the Greyhounds' Spring Break trip to the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida Friday.

In the opener against Westfield State, George was 3-for-4 and got the Hounds (8-2) on the scoreboard in the first at-bat of the game as she led off the contest with a solo home run to center field, her third round tripper of the season and the ninth of her career.

Moravian doubled the lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning when freshman second baseman Megan Taylor connected on a solo homer to center field to lead off the inning, her first collegiate home run.

The Blue & Grey extended their lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. George singled with one out while senior first baseman Jenn Dalickas was hit by a pitch with two outs. Sophomore designated player Abby Jeffries, who was 2-for-4 in the game, followed with a two-RBI double.

Westfield State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to break up the shutout bid by Moravian freshman pitcher Josie Novak. Novak allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters in the victory.

In the second game against Haverford, freshman hurler Amanda Carisone scattered two hits and a walk while striking out three batters in her third shutout of the week.

The game was scoreless until extra innings, the Greyhounds' fourth extra-inning game of the week. Using the international tiebreaker, sophomore catcher Niki Maffettone started the bottom of the eighth on second base. Sophomore third baseman Chrissy Marinaro put down a sacrifice bunt to move Maffettone to third before George ended with contest with an RBI single to left field.

Moravian was limited to a pair of hits in the pair of hits in the game with junior shortstop Lindsay Sullivan collecting the other base hit.

The Greyhounds will return to Pennsylvania and are scheduled to travel to Neumann University for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17 with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. of the opener.
