Moravian Falls to Widener by a Goal in Non-Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse squad fell to visiting Widener University, 9-8, in non-conference action Saturday on John Makuvek Field. 

How It Happened

  • The Pride netted the first three goals of the match before junior midfielder Alex Cherenson scored off a pass from junior attack Jackie Salvatore with a little under seven minutes left in the first quarter. Freshman attack Melissa Elefonte netted a goal off a Salvatore pass a little over two minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Widener added one more tally in the period to lead 4-2 after 15 minutes of action
  • Senior defender Keara Reilly scored the first goal of the squad quarter on a free position shot for the Blue & Grey before the Pride scored twice. Salvatore and sophomore midfielder Gianna Lotito found the net in the last 2:40 of the half to pull within a goal at 6-5 as the teams headed to the intermission
  • Cherenson pulled Moravian even at 6-6 with 5:48 on the clock in the third quarter. However, Widener retook the lead a minute and a half later for a 7-6 edge after 45 minutes of play
  • The squads traded goals in the fourth quarter with Cherenson and Elefonte scoring for the Greyhounds

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had five players register a point with Cherenson netting a hat trick to go with an assist
  • Elefonte recorded a pair of goals while Salvatore finished with a goal, three assists and two ground balls
  • Lotito had a goal and an assist while Reilly scored a goal
  • Junior midfielder Madi Dippel led Moravian with three ground balls and a pair of draw controls while senior defender Alise Downey, sophomore midfielder Victoria Salica and freshman midfielder Reagan Reiner all had two ground balls
  • Sophomore goalie Kayla Graef registered seven saved to go with two ground balls while junior midfielder Isabella Ziccardi and junior defender Leah Hoskin each had a pair of caused turnovers
