SAVANNAH, Ga. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse team topped host and NAIA No. 2 Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.), 20-17, in non-conference action Tuesday evening.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from freshman midfielder Reagan Reiner for her first career goal 1:14 into the contest. After the Bees knotted the score 1-1, freshman attack Melissa Elefonte netted her first collegiate goal for the Blue & Grey. SCAD recorded the next four goals to move ahead 5-2 while Elefonte scored again late in the quarter to cut the Bees' edge to 5-3 after 15 minutes of action
- Moravian posted the first six goals of the second quarter with junior midfielder Madi Dippel starting the run a minute and a half into the period. Reiner and junior attack Jackie Salvatore each scored once while junior midfielder Alex Cherenson had three goals with the final marker giving the Hounds a 9-5 advantage with just over six minutes left in the quarter. Reiner netted another goal while the Bees scored twice to give the Blue & Grey a 10-7 lead at halftime
- SCAD opened the second half with two quick goals to start the third quarter before Elefonte found the goal. The Bees closed within a goal again at 11-10 before two goals by Dippel and one from Salvatore had Moravian leading 14-11 after 45 minutes of play
- Dippel and sophomore midfielder Victoria Salica scored to start the fourth quarter. Dippel added two more goals in the period while Cherenson and Elefonte each netted a goal as the Hounds sealed their first win of the season
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had six players score points led by Dippel, who netted six goals to go along with nine draw controls and six ground balls
- Cherenson recorded four goals, two assists and a pair of caused turnovers while Elefonte added four goals, an assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers
- Reiner netted a hat trick to go along with a pair of ground balls while Salvatore contributed two goals, an assist and five ground balls
- Salica posted a goal and an assist while senior defender Keara Reilly scooped up five ground balls to go with three caused turnovers and junior defender Leah Hoskin had two ground balls
- Sophomore goalie Kayla Graef made nine save for her first victory with the Hounds
- The Blue & Grey had a 24-16 advantage in ground balls, and Moravian was 16-for-19 on clearing attempts in the match
