Greyhounds Fall to Juniata for First Conference Setback of 2024

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Juniata College, 19-13, in Landmark Conference action on John Makuvek Field Saturday in the Greyhounds first conference loss of the season. 

How It Happened

  • The Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead with a goal in the first minute of action. The Hounds countered with goals from junior midfielders Alex Cherenson and Madi Dippel for a 2-1 edge just 2:18 into play. Juniata knotted the score at 2-2 with the next goal. The Blue & Grey answered with three goals including two by Cherenson and one from Dippel to build a 5-2 lead with 4:13 to go in the first quarter. The Eagles netted two goals while midfielder Gianna Lotito found the net for Moravian as the Greyhounds held a 6-4 lead after 15 minutes of action
  • Freshman attack Melissa Elefonte began the second quarter with a goal to restore the Hounds' three-goal advantage. However, the Eagles scored the next four goals to take an 8-7 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. Cherenson netted a goal to tie the contest at 8-8, but Juniata scored once more to head to the intermission with a 9-8 edge
  • The Eagles tallied the first goal of the second half before Lotito cut the deficit to one at 10-9 at the12:36 mark. Juniata scored twice more before Cherenson added two more goals to make it 12-11 for the Eagles. Juniata netted two more markers before the end of the period to lead 14-11 after 45 minutes of play
  • The Eagles also had the first four goals of the fourth quarter. Moravian added goals from sophomore midfielder Victoria Salica and junior attack Jackie Salvatore. However, the Blue & Grey would not get any closer with Juniata scoring the final goal of the contest

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had seven players register a point in the match with Cherenson netting six goals to go with ten draw controls, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Dippel contributed two goals, two assists, three draw controls, three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls while Salvatore added a goal and three assists to become the second player in program history to reach 100 career assists, now with 101 to go with 113 career goals
  • Lotito netted two goals while Salica and Elefonte each scored once
  • Freshman midfielder Bailey Leatherman had an assist for the Hounds while junior midfielder Isabella Ziccardi scooped up three ground balls senior defender Keara Reilly added a pair of ground balls
  • Sophomore goalie Kayla Graef made six saves to go with three ground balls in 52 minutes of action while freshman goalie Elle Burd had two saves in the final eight minutes
