Moravian Scores 11 Goals in the First Quarter to Race Past Blue Jays

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse squad scored 11 goals in the first quarter on the way to a 19-9 victory over visiting Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action on John Makuvek Field Wednesday. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds took a quick 1-0 lead as junior midfielder Madi Dippel found the net less than two minutes into action. Junior midfielder Alex Cherenson scored 20 seconds later while Dippel tallied again at the 10:40 mark. The Blue & Grey put three balls in the net in a span of 43 seconds with freshman attack Melissa Elefonte, Dippel and junior attack Jackie Salvatore each scoring to stretch the lead to 6-0. The Blue Jays got onto the scoreboard with 7:31 left in the first quarter. Moravian answered with five more goals to lead 11-1 after 15 minutes of action. Elefonte scored twice during the run while Dippel and Cherenson each tallied one marker and sophomore midfielder Gianna Lotito found the net
  • Elizabethtown scored the opening goal of the second quarter before freshman midfielder Regan Reiner hit the cage a minute and a half into the period. The Blue Jays got back within nine. However, the Hounds scored four more goals to end the half with freshman midfielder Bailey Leatherman, sophomore midfielder Victoria Salica, Cherenson and Reiner each tallying a goal
  • The Blue Jays outscored the Greyhounds 4-2 in the third quarter with Salvatore and Elefonte each netting a goal
  • Moravian was limited to a goal in the fourth quarter as Leatherman just beat the final buzzer to end the match

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had eight players score a point with Dippel and Elefonte each scoring four goals. Dippel also had a pair of draw controls and two caused turnovers
  • Cherenson finished with three goals, two assists and six draw controls while Salvatore recorded two goals, five assists, eight draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Reiner contributed two goals, an assist and three ground balls while Leatherman added two goals
  • Salica and Lotito each netted one goal
  • Senior defender Keara Reilly had three ground balls
  • Sophomore goalie Kayla Graef made six saves in the first half of the match while freshman goalie Elle Burd registered ten saves in the final 30 minutes of action
  • The Hounds had a 42-33 advantage in shots and a 20-10 edge in draw controls while going 15-for-18 on clearing attempts
