Moravian Tops Widener in Overtime on Goal by Cherenson

CHESTER, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2025 season with an 11-10 overtime victory at Widener University in non-conference action Saturday.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a goal from senior midfielder Alex Cherenson just 35 seconds into the match. The Pride countered with four straight goals before freshman midfielder Ella Steirer found the net in the final minute of the quarter to cut the deficit to 4-2 after 15 minutes of action
  • Senior midfielder Madi Dippel scored to start the second quarter to pull the Hounds within a goal; however, the Pride netted a goal to restore a two-goal advantage. Moravian countered with three straight goals with two from sophomore attack Melissa Elefonte scored twice and Dippel netted a goal to move ahead 6-5 with 4:48 to go in the second period. Widener added a goal to send the match to the intermission tied at 6-6
  • Elefonte netted the first goal of the third quarter with 6:46 on the clock to put the Blue & Grey up 7-6. The Pride answered with three goals to lead 9-7 after 45 minutes of play
  • Salvatore and Dippel scored goals to open the fourth quarter and Elefonte gave the Greyhounds a 10-9 edge with 5:04 left in the period. Widener knotted the score at 10-10 with 1:57 to go as the squads headed to overtime
  • Cherenson won the match for the Hounds 1:05 into the extra session off a pass from Elefonte 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had five players record a point led by Elefonte, who had four goals and an assist to go with three caused turnovers
  • Dippel recorded three goals while Cherenson had two goals, an assist, three draw controls and a pair of ground balls
  • Steirer added a goal and three caused turnovers while senior attack Jackie Salvatore had a goal, five assists and five draw controls
  • Junior goalie Kayla Graef made 11 saves to go with two ground balls while graduate student defender Keara Reilly scooped up two ground balls
  • The Greyhounds had a 32-24 advantage in shots
