ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse squad saw an 11-goal lead closed within three in the fourth quarter as the Greyhounds held off host Elizabethtown College, 15-12, in Landmark Conference action Wednesday.
How It Happened
- The Blue Jays scored the opening goal while senior midfielder Madi Dippel tallied a goal down a player to knot the score at 1-1. Elizabethtown scored again before Dippel hit the net with her second goal at the 2:24 mark to tie the contest again at 2-2. Dippel added one more in the final minute and sophomore attack Melissa Elefonte netted a goal with ten seconds left in the period as the Hounds led 4-2 after 15 minutes of action
- Moravian began the second quarter with goals from senior midfielder Alex Cherenson and freshman midfielder Ella Steirer in the first 1:15 of the period. Freshman midfielder Kathryn Hunsinger added a goal while Dippel scored again for an 8-2 advantage midway through the quarter. Sophomore midfielder Bailey Leatherman netted an extra-player goal while Elefonte and senior attack Jackie Salvatore scored goals to push the edge to 11-2 at the intermission
- Elefonte started the second half with a goal two and a half minutes into action. Etown netted a goal while Dippel pushed the lead back to ten with another marker. Sophomore midfielder Reagan Reiner added a goal as Moravian led 14-3 after 45 minutes of play
- The Blue Jays outscored the Greyhounds 9-1 in the fourth quarter with Dippel scoring the Hounds' lone goal of the period
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had eight different players record a point with Dippel netting six goals to go with four ground balls
- Elefonte scored a hat trick while Salvatore added a goal, three assists, five draw controls and two ground balls
- Hunsinger and Steirer both had a goal and an assist with Hunsinger recording four draw controls while Cherenson, Reiner and Leatherman all tallied one goal
- Graduate student defender Keara Reilly caused a pair of turnovers while sophomore defender Maia Machado scooped up two ground balls
- Junior Kayla Graef registered 11 saves and four ground balls in 45 minutes of action while sophomore Elle Burd had one save in the final 15 minutes
- The Hounds held a 38-24 advantage in shots, a 23-22 edge in ground balls and were 19-for-26 on clearing attempts
