WHITTIER, Calif. --- The Moravian University women's lacrosse squad rolled past host Whittier (Calif.) College, 17-2, Wednesday evening as the Greyhounds began action on their west coast spring break trip.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a goal from senior attack Jackie Salvatore in the first minute of action. Senior midfielder Madi Dippel found the cage twice to push the lead to 3-0 with just under nine minutes to go in the first quarter. Salvatore scored again and freshman midfielder Ella Steirer netted a goal to make it a 5-0 edge with five minutes left in the first period. Salvatore added one more goal to give the Blue & Grey a 6-0 lead after 15 minutes of action
- Freshman midfielder Kathryn Hunsinger netted the first goal of the second quarter at the 9:31 mark for a 7-0 advantage while Dippel tallied a goal just over 30 seconds later. Senior midfielder Alex Cherenson pushed the lead to 9-0 while sophomore midfielder put the edge into double digits at 10-0 with under seven minutes left in the first half. Junior attack Victoria Salica added a goal to send Moravian to the intermission with an 11-0 lead
- The Poets netted the first goal of the second half just 45 seconds into the third quarter. Cherenson scored the Hounds next goal a little over two minutes into the period before Whittier scored again. Dippel found the net once gain to give Moravian a 13-2 lead with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter. Salica scored twice to give the Blue & Grey a 15-2 advantage after 45 minutes of play
- Junior midfielder Gianna Lotito opened the fourth quarter with a goal for the Greyhounds while freshman midfielder Izzy Lotito netted her first career goal with 3:48 remaining
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had 12 different players record a point in the match led by Salvatore with seven points on three goals and four assists to move into a tie for second all-time with Liz Bill '20 at 273 career points. Salvatore also scooped up two ground balls to go with two draw controls
- Dippel netted a team-high four goals to go with two assists, four ground balls to give her 100 career ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls while Salica added three goals and an assist
- Cherenson recorded two goals, six draw controls and a pair of ground balls while Hunsinger contributed a goal, an assist and two caused turnovers
- Reiner, Steirer, Gianna Lotito and Izzy Lotito all netted one goal
- Senior defender Erma Nesimi, sophomore attack Melissa Elefonte and sophomore defender Maia Machado each had one assist while sophomore midfielder Bailey Leatherman added two draw contols
- Junior goalie Kayla Graef recorded four saves in the first half while sophomore Elle Burd played the second half of the contest
- The Hounds held a 34-7 advantage in shots, a 13-9 edge in ground balls and a 13-6 advantage in draw controls, and Moravian was 11-for-15 in clearing attempts
