Greyhounds Split Doubleheader at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team split a Landmark Conference doubleheader played at Elizabethtown College, falling in the first game 6-1 and winning the second contest 7-3 with the Greyhounds with designated home team due to field conditions in Bethlehem.

Junior Ryan Kahn started on the mound in the opener and tossed 4.2 innings with three strikeouts to become the 15th player in school history to reach 100 career strikeouts. Junior Bryan Schoch came in relief and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits in the loss.

The Hounds had six hits in first game, all coming from different players with sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig scoring the Blue and Grey's lone run of the contest in the fourth inning on an RBI from junior designated hitter Joey Maker.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Greyhounds earned their first Landmark Conference win of the year. Sophomore Rhett Jacoby tossed a six-hit complete game, the team's first complete game performance of the season, improving to 2-0 on the year as Jacoby struck out five batters.

The Hounds had nine hits in the second game with freshman first baseman Ian Csencsits going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and sophomore right fielder Austin Markowski posting a 3-for-4 game with four RBIs.

Moravian took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Csencsits and senior centerfielder Anthony Gaetaniello each had base hits and Kulig was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Markowski followed with a two-RBI single to left field. In the fifth inning, Csencsits scored after a couple of wild throws on a bunt by Gaetaniello.

The game was tied, 3-3, entering the bottom of the sixth inning when the Greyhounds would pull ahead. After a quick out, freshman catcher Ian Luberti singled to the left side, followed by three straight walks from the Blue Jays resulting in a run to make it 4-3 Moravian. A fielder's choice for out two brought Kulig up to the plate, who got plunked with a pitch, bringing in another run to make it 5-3. Markowski sealed the win with another two-RBI single to left field that would make the final score 7-3.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action for their home opener in a non-conference matchup against Arcadia University on Tuesday, March 28 at 4:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field.
