Hounds Rally From 4-Run Deficit for Win at Drew to Open Landmark Conference Series

MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College baseball team rallied from a four run deficit to post an 8-4 victory at Drew University Friday afternoon and capture the opening game of a Landmark Conference weekend series.

The Greyhounds, who are 11-16 overall and 6-5 in Landmark Conference action, had 10 hits in the game with junior designated hitter Logan Welles going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Sophomore third baseman Evan Kulig was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles while sophomore shortstop Matt Stalter added two RBIs. Senior center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello had a pair of stolen bases to break Matt Hanson's school record for stolen bases with Gaetaniello raising his career total to 63 including 13 this spring.

Junior Dan Morrin tossed 4.1 innings of relief with two hits; two walks and four strikeouts as he earned his second win of the season. Senior Ian Carbone started on the mound and had one strikeout in three innings while junior Bryan Schoch came in to toss the final 1.2 innings and preserve the win.

Drew started the scoring with three runs in the second inning and the Rangers added one more in the third for a 4-0 lead.

Moravian would not get onto the scoreboard until the seventh inning when the Hounds plated three runs. Kulig led off the frame with a double down the left field line, and junior first baseman Joey Maker followed with a single. After an out, Welles connected on an RBI single through the right side as Kulig scored. Freshman catcher Ian Luberti ripped a single through the left side to load the bases before sophomore second baseman Tim Heard connected on an RBI single to center field as Maker raced home. Gaetaniello reached on a fielder's choice as Welles scored the final run of the inning.

The Blue and Grey scored five times in the top of the eighth for the 8-4 lead. Sophomore outfielder Austin Markowski led off with a single and Kulig added a double don the left field line to put two runners in scoring position. Maker drew a walk to load the bases, and Welles followed with another walk as Markowski scored the tying run. Junior pinch hitter David Wodzsiz put a ball on the ground to first base and a throwing error home would allow Kulig and Maker to score to give the Hounds the lead. Stalter finished off the scoring with a two-RBI single to left field as Heard and Wodzsiz scored.

The Greyhounds and the Rangers are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 15 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. to close out the Landmark Conference series.
