Field Hockey Opens With 2-1 Win Over DeSales With a Late Goal By Duddy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a very hot and humid day down at Betty Prince field, the Moravian College field hockey team opened up the 2015 season with a quality 2-1 non-conference win versus DeSales University.

"It is always great to start out with a win. It gives the girls confidence and I was really pleased with how we came out to play," stated head coach Amy Endler. "I think the girls were really itching to play since everyone else played yesterday and so we were probably ready to go today and play."

After a scoreless first half that saw the Greyhounds with a 9-3 edge in shots, the Hounds opened the scoring with a goal from senior forward Kelly O'Donnell in the 37th minute of play. The goal was set up by junior forward Erin Tiwold who drew the goalie out of position, and then slid the pass in for O'Donnell to fire it into the back of the net.

Later in the 60th minute, DeSales was able to net a rebound off of the post to tie the game a 1-1. Only a 1:04 later junior midfielder Christina Duddy was able to find the back of the end for what would end up being the game winning goal. "We were resilient and didn't hang our heads after they tied the game at one," commented Endler after the game. "We came right back and scored shortly after and took it to them and kept up the pressure for the rest of the game and were able to come out with an important win early in the season."

In the net for Moravian, senior Megan Kanyuk posted five saves for the Greyhounds while junior defender Shauna Poling made a crucial defensive save late in the second half to help maintain the team's lead.

The Hounds held a 25 to 11 advantage in shots in the contest as well as 16 to 4 edge in penalty corners.

Moravian will return to action Saturday, September 5 at 1:00 p.m. versus Bryn Mawr, down on the turf of Rocco Calvo Field.
