WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad rallied from a 4-2 deficit to earn a 6-5, eight-inning walk-off victory over Saint Mary's (Minn.) University at the PFX Spring Games Thursday.
How It Happened
- The Cardinals took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning
- Saint Mary's extended the edge to 3-0 with a run in the top of the fourth frame
- The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth with two runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Sophomore designated hitter Kyra Holtje connected on a one out single before graduate student Ajala Elmore singled. After a stolen base moved the runners up, junior pitcher Sydney Andrews ripped an RBI single through the left side to score Holtje. Junior right fielder Sarah DeStefano followed with an RBI single through the right side as Elmore raced home
- The Blue & Grey loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning but were unable to get the tying run home
- The Cardinals would push a run home in the top of the sixth to stretch the advantage to 4-2
- Moravian scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to move ahead 5-4. Sophomore center fielder Leah Chladny singled with one out before senior shortstop Holly Walter was hit by a pitch. Senior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys connected on an RBI single to bring in Chladny while junior catcher Marcie Silberman ripped an RBI single to score Walter with the tying run and out Gawrys at third base. Senior left fielder Sage Snyder hit an RBI groundout as Gawrys raced home with the go ahead run
- Saint Mary's answered in the top of the seventh with a run to knot the contest at 5-5
- The Cardinals were unable to score in the top of the eighth starting the frame with a runner at second base
- The Hounds had sophomore center fielder Shayla Morgan begin the bottom of the eighth inning for the international tiebreaker, and she moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Walter. After Gawrys was intentionally walked, Silberman ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Morgan with the winning run
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian registered 12 hits in the game with DeStefano going 2-for-3 with an RBI
- Gawrys was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run while Silberman had a 2-for-5 game with two RBIs
- Chladny went 1-for-2 with a run while Walter and Holtje were both 1-for-3 with a run
- Elmore contributed a hit and a run while Snyder and Andrews each had a hit and an RBI
- Morgan scored once for the Hounds
- Andrews made her first start of the season in the circle, and she recorded two strikeouts and did not walk a batter to improve to 2-0 on the season
