SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The No. 12 Moravian University softball squad split a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University Tuesday, winning the opener 5-1 and falling 5-4 in the night cap as the team had its 17-game winning streak snapped.
How It Happened – Game #1
- The River Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning
- The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the third inning. Senior shortstop Holly Walter and senior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys both hit two out singles before junior catcher Marcie Silberman ripped a two-RBI double to put the Hounds up 2-1
- The Blue & Grey added two runs in the top of the sixth frame for a 4-1 edge. Senior right fielder Sage Snyder hit a one-out single and scored on an RBI single by sophomore designated player Kyra Holtje. Junior third baseman Sydney Andrews followed with an RBI single to chase Holtje home
- Moravian scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Silberman was hit by a pitch with one out before sophomore Cassandra Farrell came in to pinch run. Later in the inning, Snyder connected on an RBI double to bring in Farrell
- Junior Sarah DeStefano improved to 15-1 in the circle this season with six strikeouts and no walks
How It Happened – Game #2
- The River Hawks once again took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the second contest
- Susquehanna added four runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-0 edge
- The Greyhounds countered with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to get within a run. Gawrys led off the frame with a single while Silberman singled before sophomore Madelin Cooper came in to pinch run. Graduate student second baseman Ajala Elmore singled to load the bases before Snyder ripped a three-RBI single to center field to clear the bases with Gawrys, Cooper and Elmore touching the plate. Andrews hit an RBI sacrifice fly later in the inning to score Snyder to cut the deficit to 5-4
- Moravian had the tying run at second base in the top of the seventh after Silberman singled with two outs and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. However, the Hounds were unable to get her home to tie the game
- Holtje suffered her first loss of the season in the circle, falling to as she recorded one strikeout in 4.1 innings. Junior Natalie Otto ad two strikeouts in the final 1.2 innings of the contest
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian collected 19 hits on the day with Snyder going 5-for-7 with two runs and four RBIs
- Silberman contributed three hits, two RBIs and a double while DeStefano was 2-for-3 in the second game as she played in right field
- Gawrys had two hits and two runs while Holtje registered two hits, a run and an RBI
- Walter recorded two hits, a run and a stolen base to move into tie for first in program history with 51 career stolen bases while Elmore added one hit and one run
- Andrews posted a hit and an RBI and senior right fielder Jessica Forder had a hit in the first contest
- Cooper and Farrell both scored once in the doubleheader
