BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 20 Moravian University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Ursinus College Saturday at Blue & Grey Field, winning the opener, 6-1, and falling, 7-1, in the second contest.
How It Happened – Game #1
- The Bears scored the opening run in the top of the first inning
- The Greyhounds countered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 edge. Senior shortstop Holly Walter led off with a single while senior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys reached on a fielder's choice. Senior left fielder Sage Snyder connected on an RBI single to score Walter. Snyder stole second base and moved to third on a throwing error that allowed Gawrys to score, and a second error on the play brought in Snyder
- Moravian added a run in the fifth inning for a 4-1 advantage. Gawrys singled with one out, and she scored on an RBI double by Snyder
- The Blue & Grey finished off the scoring with two runs in the sixth frame of the opener. Freshman designated player Kaley Hoffman singled with two outs and sophomore Madelin Cooper came on to pinch run. Walter reached on a single before Gawrys had a two-RBI single to score Cooper and Walter with the bases loaded
- Junior Sarah DeStefano earned the win in the circle with five strikeouts in the complete game
How It Happened – Game #2
- Ursinus jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second contest, and the Bears added three runs in both the third and fifth innings for a 7-0 advantage
- The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when junior catcher Marcie Silberman singled with two outs and eventually raced home on an RBI single by sophomore designated player Kyra Holtje
- The Blue & Grey loaded the bases in the seventh inning but were unable to score
- Junior Sydney Andrew started in the circle and had one strikeout in 2.2 innings of action while junior Natalie Otto tossed the other 4.1 innings with two strikeouts
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian registered 20 hits on the afternoon with Walter going 4-for-7 with two runs
- Silberman was 3-for-7 with a run while Gawrys had two this, two runs and two RBIs
- Snyder collected two hits, two RBIs, a double and a run while Hoffman had two hits
- Andrews added two hits while Holtje had a pair of hits and an RBI
- Sophomore center fielder Shayla Morgan contributed two hits while graduate student second baseman Ajala Elmore had one hit
- Cooper scored once on the day
