No. 23 Moravian Sweeps Juniata to Begin Landmark Conference Slate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 23 Moravian University softball squad swept visiting Juniata College, 7-0 and 6-0, to begin the 2025 Landmark Conference season Saturday at Blue& Grey Field. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The opener was a pitcher's duel until the Greyhounds scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior left fielder Sage Snyder singled with one out, and she moved into scoring position when sophomore designated player Kyra Holtje reached on a fielder's choice. Junior third baseman Sydney Andrews connected on an RBI single to score Snyder while senior right fielder Jessica Forder ripped an RBI single to bring in Holtje. Sophomore center fielder Shayla Morgan had a bunt single to load the bases before senior shortstop Holly Walter hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Andrews. Senior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys finished off the inning with a two-RBI single that scored Forder and Morgan
  • The Blue & Grey added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Morgan reached on an error to start the inning, and Walter walked before Gawrys ripped an RBI single to score Morgan. Walter crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly from graduate student second baseman Ajala Elmore
  • Junior Sarah DeStefano tossed her fifth shutout of the season in the circle as she scattered four hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Hounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game two. Gawrys drew a one-out walk before junior designated player/catcher Marcie Silberman lifted a two-run homer to right field, her team-leading seventh home run of the season and the 29th homer of her career to move into a tie for third in school history. The two RBIs also gave Silberman 101 in her career as she became the 12th player in program history to drive in 100 or more runs
  • Moravian added a run in the bottom of the third when Walter led off with a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice off Silberman's bat
  • The Blue & Grey finished the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Holtje drew a one-out walk and raced all the way home on an RBI triple by DeStefano. Morgan followed with a walk and a stolen base, and both DeStefano and Morgan scored on a two-RBI single from Morgan
  • Holtje made the start in the circle and recorded one strikeout in five innings while junior Natalie Otto finished off the shutout with two strikeouts over the final two innings

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian collected 14 hits in the two games with Gawrys going 3-for-6 with three RBIs and a run. Gawrys also recorded 23 putouts at first base during the two games to become just the second player in program history to reach 1,000 career putouts, now with 1,003
  • Walter had two hits with three RBIs and two runs while Silberman added two hits, a run, three RBIs and a homer
  • Morgan posted two hits and three runs while Andrews, Forder and DeStefano each had one hit and an RBI with DeStefano connecting on a triple
  • Snyder contributed a hit and a run while Elmore had a hit and an RBI
  • Holtje scored twice on the day
