TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College sophomore sprinter Helen Davis has been named the Landmark Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week for her performance last week.

In her first collegiate outdoor meet, Davis had a first place and a runner-up finish at the Elizabethtown College Early Bird Opener. Davis won the 100-meter dash in 12.44 seconds after the top preliminary time of 12.62 seconds, and she also took second in the 200-meter dash in 26.22 seconds.

"It's been pretty obvious to the coaches that Helen is at a whole new level this year, Coach Shaffer's jaw dropped after seeing her acceleration in a practice about three weeks ago," noted Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jesse Baumann. "As a result, we were expecting something quick from her, although I have to admit I was a little surprised to see her run sub 12.50 already.

"In trials, she stumbled a little transitioning towards the end of her drive phase, so even though she had a huge PR of 12.66, she was eager for finals knowing she had more in her if she could clean up some transitions," Baumann continued. "As it turns out, she did, and she ended up with another 0.2 drop just an hour later. She's a completely new athlete this year, and with how she opened in 100, we were thinking our school record might be in reach this spring. On top of that, she bounced back really well for an impressive 200 with Crystal, and we expect her to be under 26 in that as well this spring."

The Hounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 10 when Moravian hosts the annual Greyhound Invitational with competition starting at 10:00 a.m.
