Double-Doubles from Ewald & McPherson Lead Hounds Past Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Senior forward Camille McPherson and freshman center Nadine Ewald each posted double-doubles to lead the Moravian College women's basketball team to a 75-63 non-conference win at Wilkes University Thursday evening.

McPherson had her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Ewald posted her first career double-double with career highs of 11 points and 13 boards to go with two blocked shots. Senior guard Morgan Calabrese was also in double figures with 13 points for the Greyhounds, who improved to 4-2 overall after a pair of four-point losses. Calabrese also had three rebounds and three assists.

Freshman guard Maddie Capuano added nine points, four steals and two rebounds for the Blue and Grey while junior center Ciara Stewart contributed six points, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Freshman guard Karlie Brogan had five points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Moravian while junior forward Trista Cunningham added four points, three steals and three boards.

Sophomore forward Ariana Caiati, sophomore guard Emily Walls and freshman guard Brooke Santy all had two points and two rebounds with Santy adding two assists as the Greyhounds had 16 players see at least five minutes of action in the game with 12 of them netting at least one point. Junior guard Victoria McCaslin pulled down three rebounds.

Calabrese opened the scoring just five seconds into action, and McPherson gave the Greyhounds the lead for good at 4-2 a minute later. McPherson pushed the lead into double digits, 17-7, with a pair of free throws at the 5:25 mark, and a three-pointer from Calabrese ballooned the lead to 16 points, 29-13, late in the quarter as Moravian led 29-14 after 10 minutes of action.

The Colonels scored eight of first 10 points in the second quarter to cut the Hounds' lead back to nine points, 31-22, before a 10-0 run had Moravian up 41-22 with 2:46 until the intermission after a McPherson lay-up. Calabrese pushed the lead to 21 points before the Blue and Grey headed to the locker room with a 45-26 advantage.

Ewald opened the second half with a bucket as the Greyhounds kept the lead over 20 points for the entire third quarter including reaching 26 points twice. Moravian would rest its starters for the fourth quarter.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to begin their 2016-17 Landmark Conference season on Saturday, December 3 when Moravian hosts Elizabethtown College for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off in Johnston Hall.
