Greyhounds Jump Out to Early Lead in Win at Drew

MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead with an eight point advantage as the Greyhounds posted a 76-66 win at Drew University Wednesday evening to remain undefeated in Landmark Conference action.

The Hounds posted their fourth straight victory to improve to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in Landmark play.

Senior forward Camille McPherson led three Moravian players in double figures with 25 points including 22 in the first half to go along with seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and a career-high three blocked shots. Freshman center Nadine Ewald contributed 13 points, a team-high nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while junior forward Trista Cunningham had 10 points and four rebounds off of the bench.

Senior guard Morgan Calabrese and junior center Ciara Stewart each tossed in eight points and grabbed three boards for the Greyhounds. Freshmen guards Maddie Capuano and Karlie Brogan both scored six points with Capuano adding seven rebounds, four steals and three assists while Brogan pulled down five boards.

McPherson scored just 12 seconds into action to give Moravian a 2-0 lead, and the Hounds pushed the advantage to 7-0 as McPherson hit a three-pointer and a lay-up in the first 1:11 of action. The Rangers came back and tied the contest at 11-11 but a 7-0 run from the Blue and Grey had Moravian up 18-11 after a Cunningham lay-up. Stewart capped a 12-4 run to end the quarter as the Greyhounds led 23-15 after 10 minutes of action.

The Hounds kept their lead about eight points throughout the second quarter with the advantage hitting 17 points, 36-19, after a three-pointer from McPherson with 4:43 before the intermission, and Moravian headed to the locker room with a 41-31 lead.

The Blue and Grey kept the edge in double figures early in the third quarter before Drew moved within five points, 49-44, on a three-point play with just over three minutes left in the period. Stewart hit back-to-back baskets and a three-pointer from McPherson pushed the lead back to 12 points, 56-44, at the 1:47 mark. However, the Hounds did not score again in the third quarter as their lead was trimmed to 56-50 after 30 minutes.

Drew hit an early free throw to start the fourth quarter to move within five points but that would be as close as the Rangers would get. Calabrese drilled a three-pointer to five Moravian a 68-55 lead with 4:40 remaining, and two baskets from Cunningham, one from Brogan and a pair of Capuano free throws sealed the 10-point win.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action in its third straight road Landmark Conference game on Saturday, January 14 when the squad travels to The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
