Third Quarter Spurt Leads Greyhounds Past TCNJ

EWING, N.J. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team turned a one-point halftime lead into a 10-point edge by outscoring host The College of New Jersey, 23-14, in the third quarter as the Greyhounds earned a 74-66 victory in non-conference action Monday evening.

The Hounds improve to 6-2 on the season with the win as the Blue and Grey posted their second three-game winning streak of the season. Senior forward Camille McPherson tossed in a game-high 32 points to surpass 1,000 points in her career as a college student-athlete including 402 points as a freshman at NCAA Division II the University of the Sciences. McPherson, who was 12-for-20 from the floor Monday evening, also had six rebounds and four assists for Moravian.

The Greyhounds had two other players in double figures with freshman guard Maddie Capuano tossing in 14 points to go with career highs of eight rebounds and five steals while dishing out three assists. Junior forward Trista Cunningham contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Blue and Grey.

Senior guard Morgan Calabrese added eight points, three boards and three assists while freshman center Nadine Ewald had a game-high nine rebounds with seven points and a pair of steals. Freshman guard Karlie Brogan had Moravian's other three points while freshman guard Brooke Santy contributed a career-high four rebounds with a blocked shot. Junior center Ciara Stewart and sophomore forward Ariana Caiati each had one rebound.

Capuano opened the scoring with a lay-up on the Greyhounds' first possession, and Moravian had a 7-0 lead after a lay-up from Calabrese at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter. The Lions would close within a point at 12-11 before a jumper by McPherson has the Blue and Grey leading 14-11 after 10 minutes of action.

The Hounds led most of the second quarter with the advantage reaching four points on four occasions. However, TCNJ took a 24-23 lead with 27 seconds left in the half. Ewald answered with a jumper to give Moravian a 25-24 edge as the teams headed to the locker room.

TCNJ scored first in the second half but McPherson would give the Greyhounds the lead for good on a lay-up at the 9:00 mark. The Lions were down just a point, 34-33, before an 8-0 run by Moravian gave the Hounds a 42-33 lead on a jumper by Capuano. McPherson pushed the advantage into double digits, 46-35, with 1:14 left in the third quarter, and the basket also gave her the 1,000th point of her collegiate career. The Greyhounds had a 48-38 lead after 30 minutes of action.

Ewald opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up, and Moravian's lead reached 14 points, 60-46, on a three-pointer by Brogan with 5:34 remaining. The Lions tried to pull close late in the quarter but Capuano and McPherson combined to go 6-for-6 at the foul line in the final 52 seconds to seal the victory.

Moravian was 17-of-24 at the charity stripe in the contest while TCNJ was just 8-for-13. The Hounds also shot 26-of-56 from the floor (46.4 percent) including 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) in the second half.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, December 7 in a non-conference game at Immaculata University tipping off at 6:00 p.m.
