Greyhounds Drop First Landmark Conference Game of 2016-17 at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian College women's basketball dropped its first Landmark Conference game of the 2016-17 season Saturday afternoon in an 83-67 loss at The Catholic University of America.

The Greyhounds, who had won four straight contests, fall to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in Landmark Conference action this winter.

Senior forward Camille McPherson ed three Moravian players in double digits with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman center Nadine Ewald contributed 12 points, six boards and a pair of steals while freshman guard Karlie Brogan added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Senior guard Morgan Calabrese and freshman guard Maddie Capuano each scored nine points for the Hounds with Calabrese adding four rebounds and three steals and Capuano contributing four assists and three boards. Junior forward Trista Cunningham had four rebounds and three points while junior center Ciara Stewart added two points and two boards as Moravian had 62 of its 67 points come from the starting lineup.

The Greyhounds and Cardinals traded baskets early before Calabrese connected on a three-pointer to give the Blue and Grey a 9-6 edge three minutes into the contest. Moravian maintained its lead with three-pointers from Brogan, Capuano and McPherson, the last one giving the Greyhounds an 18-13 advantage with just under three minutes left in the period. However, Catholic finished the quarter with a 10-3 run to hold a 23-21 edge after the first ten minutes of action.

McPherson connected on a lay-up at the 8:20 mark of the second quarter as the Greyhounds tied the contest at 25-25 but a 7-0 run by the Cardinals gave Catholic control on the scoreboard. The host Cardinals headed to the locker room with a 41-30 halftime lead.

The Cardinals maintained their lead throughout the third quarter and had their largest lead of the game, 66-45, after 30 minutes of action. The Greyhounds started the final period with a 15-3 run to pull within nine points, 69-60, on a lay-up from Brogan with 5:51 still to play. After Catholic scored, back-to-back baskets by Ewald and Calabrese had Moravian down eight points, 72-64, with just under five minutes remaining. However, the Cardinals used an 11-5 run to end the game.

Moravian is scheduled to return to the court on Wednesday, January 18 when the Greyhounds host No. 3 The University of Scranton in Johnston Hall in a Landmark Conference game tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
