Schaffer Wins Pole Vault on Opening Day of 2012 ECAC Indoor Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. --- Senior Abby Schaffer of the Moravian College women's indoor track & field team won her second title in three years in the pole vault on the opening day of the 2012 ECAC Division III Indoor Championships being hosted by Rutgers-Newark at the New York City Armory.

Moravian is in seventh place of 37 teams scoring points on the opening day at 10.33.  Tufts University is first with 23 points while Wheaton (Mass.) College and Williams College are tied for second with 18 points after seven scored events.

Schaffer, who entered the meet tied for the best mark with Michelle Farve from Ramapo College of New Jersey, posted a winning height of 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11 1/2 inches), four inches higher than Farve. Shaffer won the pole vault at the 2010 ECAC Championships while competing for Widener University, and she was the runner-up last season in her first year at Moravian.  Schaffer's victory earned Moravian ten points in the team standings, and the Greyhounds picked up another 0.33 points in the pole vault as sophomore Allison Vanek tied for eighth, clearing 3.50 meters (11 feet, 5 3/4 inches).

Moravian had two other competitors in the pole vault with freshman Hailey Kester placing 15th at 3.35 meters (ten feet, 11 3/4 inches) and freshman Dana Fineman tying for 17th at 3.20 meters (ten feet, six inches).

On the track during the opening day of competition, senior Lisa Williamson was sixth in her heat and 27th overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.19 seconds.  Williamson also ran the opening leg of Moravian's 4x200-meter relay squad with freshmen Brianna Wright, Morgan Redmond and Brielle Sutter that was second in its heat and 12th overall in a time of 1:46.85, the tenth best time in school history.

The Greyhounds will have four student-athletes competing in the second day of competition with Williamson and Sutter each running in two sprint races while Vanek and junior Micah Leonard compete in the long jump.
