Schaffer Wins Pole Vault; Leonard Sets Record in Triple Jump at ECAC Championships

TROY, N.Y. --- Senior Abby Schaffer won the pole vault and junior Micah Leonard broke the school record in the triple jump to lead the Moravian College women's track & field team on the first day of the 2012 ECAC Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Thursday.

Moravian is in fifth place of 40 teams scoring points on the first day of the meet through eight events.  Ithaca College is in first place with 31 points and is followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology in second place with 22 points and Wheaton (Mass.) College in third at 20 points.

Schaffer captured the pole vault title for the second year as she cleared 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5 ¼ inches) to earn ten points for the Greyhounds.  Freshman Hailey Kester finished ninth in the event at 3.40 meters (11 feet, 1 ¾ inches).

Leonard surpassed her own school record in the triple jump with a leap of 11.87 meters (38 feet, 11 ½ inches) which placed her second in the event and earning Moravian another eight.  The leap also moved her up to 12th on the Track & Field Results Reporting System list in the event. Those women ranked in the top 22 for individuals and top 16 for relays at the end of the season will compete at the national meet next week in Claremont, California.

On the track, senior Lisa Williamson was second in her heat and fifth overall in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.57 seconds to advance to Friday's final in the event.  Williamson also joined with freshmen Morgan Redmond, Brielle Sutter and Brianna Wright to finish 13th in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:59.99.

Redmond took 19th in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 15.65 seconds while senior Cadee Rockwell was 12th in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:55.54.
