Moravian Splits Matches on Second Day of 15th Annual Greyhound Premiere

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in Johnston Hall Saturday on the second day of the 15th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational.

The Hounds picked up their first win of the season in the opener as the squad defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 before dropping a four-set match to York College of Pennsylvania by scores of 25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22 to end the tournament. Moravian nearly forced a fifth set against the Spartans as the Blue and Grey led 19-16 before York scored seven straight points.

Senior outside hitter Mary Zacher led the Hounds with 17 kills to go with 17 digs and three service aces in the win over the Panthers. Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Kusmider contributed seven kills and six digs while freshman right side hitter Emerson Gieryic and freshman middle blocker Madi Anslow each had four kills.

Sophomore setter Victoria Kauffman paced the Moravian offense against Pitt-Bradford with 31 assists to go with four digs while senior libero Jean Markovic had nine digs and two assists. Junior middle blocker Erin Tiger contributed three kills while sophomore defensive specialist Alexis Szaro added six digs.

Zacher also led the Greyhounds in the match against York with 14 kills, 22 digs and a pair of service aces. She now has 1,047 kills, which is 11th in school history, and 1,208 digs, which is eighth all-time at Moravian, in her four seasons with the Hounds. Tiger posted 13 kills and a pair of blocks while Anslow added eight kills.

Markovic was named to the All-Tournament Team after recording 21 digs to move into second in school history with 1,680 digs in her career. Kauffman added 42 assists, five digs and two blocks while freshman outside hitter Corinne Frick had three kills and nine digs. Kusmider contributed four kills and three digs while junior right side hitter Rachel Farmer recorded a pair of kills. Szaro also had nine digs.

Moravian is scheduled to close out its home stand to start the season when the Greyhounds host DeSales University on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
