BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball team tied the school record for three-pointers made in a game with 22 as the Greyhounds defeated Dickinson College, 104-75, in the championship game of the 44th Steel Club Classic in Johnston Hall Monday evening.
How It Happened
- The Hounds scored first on a shot by freshman forward Jametric Harris before the Red Devils scored. Moravian moved back ahead 6-2 after a bucket from Harris, and the Blue & Grey pushed the advantage seven points at 11-4 at the 14:06 mark on a three-pointer from Chad Kratzer. Dickinson closed within three points at 15-12 with 11:46 on the clock
- The Greyhounds got two three-pointers from senior forward Michael Leonardo and one from junior guard Porter Kelly to stretch the lead out to 31-16 with 7:04 until the intermission. The Red Devils pulled within four points at 33-29 with just over two and a half minutes in the half. Moravian finished the half with an 11-4 to head to the locker room with a 44-33 edge after a late three-pointer from Kelly
- Dickinson hit a three-pointer to start the half before graduate student guard Alex Dietz connected on a three-pointer and a jumper to make the advantage 49-36. The Red Devils closed within eight points at 50-42 at the 15:47 mark before Kratzer drained a three-pointer
- The Hounds slowly pulled away as the second half moved along
- The Blue & Grey went 22-for-43 beyond the three-point line, tying the program record for made three-pointers in a contest that was originally set on January 13, 2018 versus The Catholic University of America in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds have attempted 138 three-pointers in their last three games, and the squad shot 42-of-95 beyond the three-point line in the Steel Club Classic
- Moravian is now 56-31 all-time in the Steel Club Classic and won its 18th tournament title, and first since 2014 although five years during that stretch featured predetermined matchups and no tournament championship contest
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had five players in double figures led by Kratzer, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament after scoring 23 points to go with four assists and four steals. Kratzer had 50 points in the two-day tournament and was 13-for-27 on three-pointers himself
- Dietz tossed in 22 points with three rebounds and two assists as he went 6-for-7 on three-pointers while Kelly finished with 19 points, a career-high eight assists, three steals, three rebounds and a 5-for-8 performance on three-pointers as he earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team
- Leonardo recorded 11 points to go with six boards while Harris had ten points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots
- Freshman forward Brave Haugh registered seven points while sophomore guard Taylor Perlmutter posted five points and five assists
- Sophomore guard George Cutler contributed five assists, four points and two rebounds while junior forward Liam Cummiskey added three points and three assists
- The Hounds were 38-for-70 from the field, 22-for-43 on three-pointers and 6-for-10 at the foul line as the squad hit the century mark for the second time this season, the first time since the 2017-18 campaign that the Blue & Grey have scored more than 100 points in multiple games in one year with the 2017-18 team hitting the 100-point plateau three times
- The Greyhounds forced the Red Devils into 22 turnovers while committing just ten miscues
