BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad had a 16-point lead early in the second half; however, visiting The Catholic University of America rallied for a 78-74 victory over the Greyhounds in Johnston Hall Saturday.
How It Happened
- The Cardinals hit the opening three-pointer of the contest while junior guard Porter Kelly hit a jumper to give the Hounds a 4-3 edge just over two minutes into action. After Catholic retook a one-point lead, junior guard Chad Kratzer and junior forward Marquis Ratcliff drained three-pointers as the Blue & Grey moved ahead 12-7 five and a half minutes into the contest. Moravian pushed the advantage out to five points at 14-9 on a lay-up from sophomore guard Taylor Perlmutter while the Cardinals closed it back to a one-point contest at 16-15 midway through the first half
- The game was still just a one-point affair with just under five minutes on the clock when Moravian ran off nine straight points on a three-pointer from Kelly, a three-pointer by Perlmutter, a free throw from Kelly and a lay-up by Kratzer to take a 30-20 edge with 3:03 on the clock. Kelly added another three-pointer late as the Hounds headed to the locker room with a 36-25 advantage
- Kratzer began the second half with two free throws and a three-pointer as the Greyhounds pushed the lead to 16 points at 41-25. The Cardinals closed the game some; however, a lay-up from Ratcliff had the Blue & Grey up 57-46 with 10:04 left in the half
- Catholic slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually knotted the contest at 63-63 with 2:56 remaining. Ratcliff stopped a three-minute scoring drought for Moravian with a free throw, but the Cardinals sank a three-pointer to move ahead 66-64 with 2:13 to go. Krazter drained a pair of free throws with 1:09 on the clock to knot the score at 66-66. Ratcliff attempted a baseline jumper as time expired, but the shot bounced off the rim to force overtime
- The Cardinals scored the first six points of the overtime session before freshman forward Jametric Harris got the Hounds on the scoreboard. Moravian pulled within two points at the 1:40 mark on a lay-up by Ratcliff and again with five seconds to go on a three-pointer from Kelly; however, Catholic score the final basket to seal the contest
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had three players score in double figures led by Kratzer, who had a game-high 22 points to go with five rebounds and a pair of assists
- Kelly finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals while Ratcliff added 18 points, seven boards and three blocked shots
- Perlmutter and Harris both scored seven points with Harris contributing three rebounds and two blocked shots
- Senior guard/forward Michael Leonardo registered seven rebounds and two assists while junior forward Liam Cummiskey had a pair of boards
- The Hounds shot 24-for-64 from the floor, 12-for-35 beyond the three-point line and 14-for-18 at the foul line in the contest
