Moravian Unable to Overcome Slow Start at Albright

READING, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team outscored host Albright College over the last three quarters but it wasn't enough to overcome a 15-point first quarter deficit as the Greyhounds fell to the Lions, 62-53, in non-conference action.

How It Happened

  • The Hounds opened the scoring with a jumper by senior forward Sam Osorio on Moravian's first possession, and the Blue & Grey were up 4-3 after a lay-up from freshman guard/forward Lizzie Lustig at the 8:26 mark. Albright went on a 14-0 run to build a 17-4 advantage before junior guard Mikayla Anderson sank a jumper with just under three and a half minutes left in the first quarter. The Lions would lead 26-11 after ten minutes of action
  • The Greyhounds slowly closed the gap in the second quarter, getting within seven points at 33-26 on a pair of free throws by freshman center/forward Lanie Herbert. However, Albright used a 6-0 run to head to the locker room with a 39-26 edge
  • The Lions began the second half with a 6-1 run to make the lead 18 points. Moravian got back within 12 points at 47-35 after a three-point play from junior forward Brielle Guarente in the final minute of the third quarter
  • The Hounds were able to get with seven points, 54-47, on a pair of free throws by Osorio with 1:12 left in the contest, and Osorio sank a jumper with 16 seconds to play for the final points of the contest 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had two players in double figures with Osorio netting a team-high 15 points to go with nine rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists
  • Sophomore guard Juliana Vassallo tossed in a season-best 13 points with three rebounds and two steals while Guarente finished with seven points, three rebounds and three steals
  • Herbert netted the first six points of her career to go with two rebounds while freshman center/forward Grace Steffen had five points, seven boards and three blocked shots
  • Anderson, Lustig and sophomore guard Jayda Cartagena all scored two points with Anderson adding three rebounds and a pair of assists and Lustig grabbing two boards
  • Freshman guard Emma Altmire had one point while senior guard Reganne Flannery added two rebounds
  • The Greyhounds were 18-for-58 from the field, 3-for-10 on three-pointers and 14-for-21 at the foul line
