Moravian Holds Off Lycoming for Fourth Landmark Conference Victory

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team scored five of the final seven points to hold off host Lycoming College, 58-54, in Landmark Conference action Sunday as the Greyhounds improved to 4-2 in conference play this winter.

How It Happened

  • Freshman center Grace Steffen scored just 28 seconds into the game to give the Hounds a 2-0, and the Blue & Grey held the lead for the rest of the contest. Junior forward Brielle Guarente hit a jumper to make it 4-0, and the Greyhounds led 11-2 after a free throw from sophomore guard Jayda Cartagena at the four-minute mark. Moravian held a 13-9 edge after ten minutes of action
  • After the Warriors pulled within two points to start the second quarter, the Blue & Grey put together a 14-4 run capped by a lay-up from senior forward Sam Osorio with 2:20 left in the period. Lycoming netted the final seven points of the half as Moravian headed to the locker room with a 27-22 advantage
  • The Greyhounds pushed the advantage to seven points at 30-23 on a Guarente free throw before the Warriors closed within a point at 30-29 with 4:03 on the clock. Guarente connected on a jumper to make the edge six points while Osorio sank a free throw late in the third quarter as the Blue & Grey led 40-37 after 30 minutes of play
  • Moravian opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run to hold a 45-37 advantage on a Guarente jumper. Lycoming slowly closed the gap and got within a point at 53-52 with just 41 seconds remaining. The Hounds finished off the win with two free throws from Osorio, two by freshman guard/forward Lizzie Lustig and one from senior guard Reganne Flannery in the final 28 seconds 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players net double figures with Guarente tossing in a career-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals
  • Osorio had 14 points and a career-best 17 rebounds for her 13th career double-double and second of the season, and she also had four blocked shots and two assists. Her 17 rebounds moved Osorio into 19th in school history with 557 boards in her career
  • Lustig recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals while Cartagena finished with seven points
  • Flannery registered four assists, three points, two boards and two steals while Steffen and junior guard Mikayla Anderson both had two points with Anderson grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists
  • The Greyhounds shot 22-of-51 from the field, 1-for-8 on three-pointers and 13-of-20 free throws, and the Blue & Grey held a 42-34 advantage on the boards
