Moravian Races Past Goucher on the Road in Landmark Conference Action

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team scored the opening points just four seconds into the game and lead the entire way as the Greyhounds defeated hosted Goucher College, 72-58, in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening. 

How It Happened

  • The Hounds scored off the opening tip as junior forward Brielle Guarente hit a lay-up just four seconds into action. Moravian led 8-2 after another lay-up by Guarente at the 7:22 mark while Goucher closed within a point twice, the final time at 14-13 with 3:17 left in the first period. The Blue & Grey connected on the final two buckets of the quarter including a lay-up from sophomore guard Jayda Cartagena to beat the buzzer and give the Greyhounds an 18-13 edge after ten minutes of action
  • The Gophers began the second quarter with a 6-2 run to get back within a point at 20-19 before Guarente drained a jumper and senior forward Sam Osorio scored on a lay-up. Goucher pulled within one point again at 24-23 with 3:38 until intermission; however, the Hounds countered with an 8-0 run capped by a lay-up from Osorio to make it 32-23. The Gophers hit the final points of the half as Moravian headed to the locker room with a 32-25 advantage
  • The Hounds came out of the locker room with a hot shooting hand, making their first five shots of the third quarter as part of a 12-0 run that pushed the lead to 44-25 after Osorio hit a jumper just over three minutes into action in the second half. Moravian stretched the advantage to 24 points at 55-31 when freshman center Grace Steffen made a lay-up with 1:38 to go in the quarter. Freshman guard/forward Lizzie Lustig connected on a three-pointer to set the Blue & Grey lead at 58-36 after 30 minutes of play
  • The fourth quarter saw the Greyhounds extend the advantage to 27 points twice, the final time at 66-39 with 5:31 to go when Osorio drained a jumper. From that point, the Gophers finished the contest on a 19-6 run with Guarente scoring the final two points of the night

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double figures with Guarente tossing in a career-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists while Steffen posted her first career double-double with a career-best 17 points to go along with 11 boards
  • Osorio recorded her first double-double of the season and 12th of her career with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Osorio became the 25th player in program history to reach 500 career rebounds on her seventh rebound of the night with 4:44 remaining in the third quarter
  • Senior guard Reganne Flannery netted six points to go with a game-high five assists while Cartagena registered five points, three rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals while 
  • Junior guard Mikayla Anderson added seven rebounds and four points while Lustig also had four points and two boards
  • Freshman center Lanie Herbert contributed four points, three rebounds and a pair of assists while sophomore guard Juliana Vassallo added two points
  • The Hounds connected on 33-of-71 field goal attempts, 2-of-15 three-pointers and 4-of-8 free throws in the game
  • The Blue & Grey also had a 50-31 advantage on the boards including 22 offensive rebounds
