Greyhounds Fall at Wilkes to End First Half of Landmark Conference Slate

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad fell to host Wilkes University, 66-60, in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening to end the first half of the conference slate this winter.

How It Happened

  • The Colonels hit the first basket of the game while freshman center Grace Steffen put the Hounds on the board with a free throw. Freshman guard/forward Lizzie Lustig hit a three-pointer to knot the score at 4-4, and the Blue & Grey moved ahead 7-5 on a three-pointer by Steffen. Moravian pushed the lead out to eight points at 17-9 after a three-point play from sophomore guard Jayda Cartagena, and the Greyhounds had a 17-13 edge after ten minutes of action
  • Senior forward Sam Osorio opened the second quarter with a lay-up, and Steffen drained a pair of free throws to give the Hounds their largest lead of the contest at 25-16 with 7:18 left until the intermission. Wilkes made a pair of runs to close with two points at the 4:41 mark and a point with just ten seconds until the intermission while two free throws by Lustig sent Moravian to the locker room with a 33-30 advantage
  • The third quarter saw the game stay close with neither team leading by more than four points. The period had five ties and saw the Blue & Grey up by four points at 39-35 on a Steffen jumper. The Colonels took a three-point lead before junior forward Brielle Guarente hit a jumper to close the gap to 48-47 for Wilkes after 30 minutes of play
  • Steffen connected on a lay-up for the first points of the fourth quarter as Moravian went back ahead. The Hounds were up 53-52 after a free throw from Cartagena at the 4:34 mark, however, Wilkes went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good, and the Colonels make six free throws in the final minute to push the lead to as many as nine points 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four players in double figures led by Steffen, who recorded her third double-double of the year with 15 points and a career high 14 rebounds
  • Lustig tossed in 13 points to go with two boards and a pair of assists while Osorio picked up her third double-double of the year and 14th of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with three steals
  • Guarente recorded 12 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists while Cartagena finished with eight points, four assists and two boards
  • The Hounds shot 19-for-64 from the floor, 5-for-19 on three-pointers and 17-for-23 at the foul line, and the Blue & Grey forced the Colonels into 21 turnovers while committing just 14 miscues
