Greyhounds Start Home Season with Tough Loss to King's

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's tennis team began its 2013-14 home season with a 9-0 loss to King's College in non-conference action Tuesday in a match that was closer than the final score.

"King's was a tough team but our young squad played hard and showed improvement since the Muhlenberg Tournament," said Head Coach Art Smith.

While the Monarchs opened the match with three straight wins in doubles action, the Greyhounds' duo of sophomores Matt Tuorto and John Wylie fought hard at first doubles, falling by an 8-6 score.

In singles action, four Greyhounds forced a tiebreaker in a one of their two sets. Wylie dropped his first set, 7-6 including 7-5 in the tiebreaker at first singles while Tuorto kept his third singles match close before dropping a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 decision. Freshman Giovanni Lombardi forced the second set of his fourth singles match to a tiebreaker while sophomore C.J. Widdifield played a tiebreaker in the first set of his sixth singles contest. Freshman Dan Schmucker nearly forced a tiebreaker in the first set at fifth singles, falling 7-5.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, September 26 in their final dual match of the fall at Albright College.
