Greyhounds Push Berry to the Brink in 6-3 Setback

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Moravian College men's tennis team won three exciting games and forced six hard-earned victories by Berry (Ga.) College as the Greyhounds concluded their Spring Break trip in the Sunshine State with a dual match loss.

In singles action, junior Lewis Cooper won a third-set tiebreaker 10-6 at the No. 3 spot after splitting two sets, 3-6 and 7-5. Cooper improved to 3-2 in singles this spring in his first tennis action of the year after playing on the Moravian College men's soccer team in the fall.

Freshman Dan Schmucker also won a long match at sixth singles, defeating his Berry foe 10-6 in the tiebreaker after halving the opening sets, 6-4 and 5-7. The Moravian rookie won his fourth dual match of the 2013-14 season.

Sophomore John Wylie nearly tied the singles battle at three apiece, but fell at No. 2 singles in yet another three-set match, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-1).

On the doubles courts, Wylie and sophomore Matt Tuorto went back and forth with the Berry No. 1's and outlasted their opponents 8-6. The Greyhound duo now boasts a 5-2 record in double action this season.

Cooper and freshman Mike Antonis also had a see-saw match at second doubles, but were outlasted by a Berry twosome, 8-6.

Sophomore C.J. Widdifield and freshman Giovanni Lombardi won three games at third doubles, but fell 8-3 to their Berry opponents.

The Greyhounds return North to begin their Landmark Conference slate on March 15 at the Hoffman Courts with a dual match against Goucher College at 1 p.m.
