Men’s Tennis Performs Perfect Sweep of Albright College

READING, Pa. – The Moravian College men's tennis team did not drop a single set in a 9-0 sweep of Albright College on Wednesday afternoon in Reading.

The victory, which moved the Greyhounds to 1-1 on the season, was a nice rebound after suffering a similar 9-0 defeat in their season opener against King's College last week.

"I think our guys played very well," head coach Art Smith '68 said. "We saw some real improvement in our doubles; we've been working hard on that. Albright played very hard, and I feel the final score was not indicative of the level of play. We got off to great first sets in all of our singles matches and took some of the steam out of their sails."

One of those improved doubles duos was the No. 1 team of sophomore Matt Tuorto and John Wylie. The pair teamed up for an 8-5 win at first doubles over their Albright opponents.

"It was a great result," said Tuorto, a team captain. "As a team we are improving each day, and I'm really happy we got a complete team win today. We all worked really hard for it."

Tuorto finished his successful day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at third singles, while Wylie won his match at No. 1 singles by a 6-1, 6-3 final score.

At second doubles, freshmen Mike Antonis and Giovanni Lombardi won 8-0, and sophomore C.J. Widdifield and freshman Dan Schmucker also won a perfect 8-0 match at third doubles.

Antonis won his No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-1, while Lombardi (6-0, 6-2), Schmucker (6-1, 6-0) and Widdifield (6-1, 6-2) were all wildly successful in their respective singles matches.

The win was an important one as it not only gave the Greyhounds their first win of the season, it also raised confidence levels team-wide as they head into competition with a strong field at the Scranton Invitational this weekend.

"Hopefully this will give us a little momentum heading into Saturday when the opposition will be very tough," Smith said.
