Men's Tennis Takes Muhlenberg to Brink in Tough Loss

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's tennis team saw three singles matches go the distance of three sets but the Greyhounds were unable to pull out a win, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 6-3, Thursday evening.

The Hounds opened the contest by taking a 2-1 lead in the doubles action. Sophomores Matt Tuorto and John Wylie earned an 8-2 win at first doubles while junior Lewis Cooper and freshman Mike Antonis needed a tiebreaker to capture a 9-8 (7-3) victory at second doubles.

Just two singles matches would end in straight sets with the Mules winning those to take a 3-2 lead. Muhlenberg made its lead 4-2 with three singles contests still on the courts in third sets after Cooper fell by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 score. Antonis came back from a 4-1 deficit in the third set at fourth singles to post a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Wylie had a chance to even the match at 4-4; however, he dropped a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 contest at second singles. Freshman Giovanni Lombardi broke his opponents' serve, down 6-5 in the third set at fifth singles before falling 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) in the final match to end the contest.

Despite the loss, Moravian finishes the 2013-14 academic year with a 10-6 advantage on Muhlenberg in the annual Matte Award standings as the trophy will head back to Bethlehem for the first time since 2002-03.

Moravian is slated to return to action on Saturday, April 12 when the squad will host Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference match starting at 1:00 p.m. on Hoffman Courts.
