Men's Tennis Gears Up for 2014 Debut

Bethlehem, Pa.---The Moravian College men's tennis team is a group consistently made up of sophomores and juniors who want to make a name for themselves. Coach Art Smith, the Director of Tennis is taking on his fourth season, and is looking to get back to the Landmark Semi-finals to redeem themselves from last year. The team finished with an 8-10 overall record and a 4-3 conference record.

"The players have been doing a great job. They have been adjusting well to my new responsibilities which makes things that much easier as we move forward with the program," stated Smith, who is embarking on his first season with the women's tennis team at Moravian.

The Blue and Grey will look to co-captains senior Lewis Cooper and junior Matt Tuorto. Cooper earned Landmark Conference All-Conference Second Team for Singles and All-Conference Second Team in doubles, last spring Cooper went 10-6 in singles and 12-4 in doubles for the Hounds.

Tuorto was also named to the Landmark Conference All-Conference Second Team for doubles, a year ago. He was 10-13 in singles and 11-8 in doubles and was named Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on April 21. Junior John Wylie posted a 9-10 record in singles and 11-8 in doubles earning All-Conference Second Team for doubles with Tuorto.

Coach Smith had this to say about his co-captains "Lewis and Matt do an outstanding job on and off the court and have really made us a cohesive group this year."

Smith went on to his expectations of the season "I'm optimistic about the season, we finished in fourth last season and we have such a great group of guys. We are looking to improve from last year. We were right in the matches with the two teams ranked above us and feel that the guys' hard work will pay off."

The Moravian College men's tennis team will play their first match away on Saturday, September 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Delaware Valley College.
