Men's Tennis Awarded Top Seed in 2015 ECAC DIII Outdoor Championship

DANBURY, Conn. --- The Moravian College men's tennis team has received the top seed in the 2015 ECAC Division III Men's Outdoor Tennis Championship, and the Greyhounds will play fourth seed Elmira (N.Y.) College on a semifinal contest on Saturday, May 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the tournament being hosted by third seed Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Maryland.

The host Mustangs will play second seed The United States Merchant Marine Academy in the first match of the tournament on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Sunday's schedule includes the third-place match at 9:00 a.m. followed by the championship contest at 12:00 p.m.

Fourth-year Head Coach Art Smith has led the Greyhounds to an 11-7 mark on the season, and the Blue & Grey reached the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Tournament with a 6-2 conference slate including a 5-4 victory over USMMA on March 22 to begin the Landmark season.

"Our players are really excited to be in the ECAC Tennis Tournament along with three other quality teams," commented Smith.

The Mariners are 12-5 on the season while host Stevenson has a 9-7 record. Elmira enters the ECAC Tournament at 8-6. According to the ECAC record books, this is the inaugural Division III Outdoor Tennis Championship.

Moravian is led on the court by senior Lewis Cooper, who has a 15-7 singles slate with a 13-5 mark at third singles. Junior Matt Tuorto has a 12-9 mark including a 11-6 record at first singles while sophomore Dan Schmucker is 10-9 this season with a 7-7 mark at fourth singles.

Juniors John Wylie and C.J. Widdifield both have eight singles wins this year with Wylie in the second slot in the line-up and Widdifield playing sixth singles. Sophomore Giovanni Lombardi has posted seven victories while playing fifth singles while freshman David Wilson has a 3-0 mark in limited singles action.

Tuorto and Wylie have tied the single season school record with 15 wins in doubles including a 15-8 overall mark and a 13-5 slate at first doubles. Cooper and Lombardi are 14-8 at second doubles while Schmucker and Wilson are 10-8 at third doubles for the Greyhounds.
