Hounds Fall to Goucher in Landmark Semifinals

TOWSON, Md. --- The third seeded Moravian College men's tennis team saw its 2014-15 season come to a close in a 5-1 loss at second seed Goucher College Tuesday afternoon in the Landmark Conference Semifinals.

As the doubles started, the Greyhounds had a lead in all three contests as they hit the halfway mark; however, the Gophers ended up with a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Dan Schmuker and freshman David Wilson finished their third doubles contest first, falling 8-5. Juniors Matt Tuorto and John Wylie would even the match for Moravian with an 8-6 win at first doubles as the duo tied the single season record with their 15th doubles victory of the year. Senior Lewis Cooper and sophomore Giovanni Lombardi fell 8-6 in a hard-fought second doubles match.

In the postseason, a match ends as soon as a team reaches he required five points for the victory. Moravian won the first set at the top four singles contests it would need for the victory as Tuorto, Wylie, Cooper and Schmucker each won their first set with Schmucker winning in a tiebreaker at fourth singles. He was tied at 5-5 in the second set when the contest ended. Goucher would be victorious at sixth and fifth singles to earn a 4-1 lead. Cooper, Tuorto and Wylie all went to third sets in their matches before Cooper fell at third singles. Tuorto and Wylie did not finish their contests after the Gophers earned the final point.

Moravian finishes the 2014-15 campaign at 11-7 and will have six of its seven players back when the season starts next fall.
