Men's Tennis Blanks Elmira, 5-0, in ECAC DIII Championship Semifinal Match

OWINGS MILLS, Md. --- The top seeded Moravian College men's tennis team posted a 5-0 victory over fourth seed Elmira College in the semifinals at Stevenson University on Saturday to advance to the 2015 ECAC Division III Outdoor Men's Tennis Championship match on Sunday.

The Greyhounds, now 12-7 on the season, will face off against Landmark Conference rival and second seed The United States Merchant Marine Academy in the title match on Sunday, May 10 at 12:00 p.m. The Mariners defeated host and third seed Stevenson, 5-2, in the other semifinal contest. Elmira and Stevenson will play in the third place match at 9:00 a.m.

Saturday, the Greyhounds started doubles with a 1-0 lead as Elmira only traveled with five players and was unable to field a third doubles team. Juniors Matt Tuorto and John Wylie posted an 8-3 triumph at first doubles to extend their school-record win total to 16 doubles victories for the season. Senior Lewis Cooper and sophomore Giovanni Lombardi also won by an 8-3 final at second doubles as Cooper picked up his school record 44th career doubles win.

Moravian had the lead go to 4-0 to start singles with an open flight in sixth singles, and Cooper earned the final point for the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at third singles. Tuorto, Wylie, Giovanni and sophomore Dan Schmucker had all won their first set in singles action and were leading their second sets when Cooper finished to end the match.

The Greyhounds will look to defeat USMMA for a second time this season as the Hounds earned a 5-4 win at Hoffman Courts on March 22 to begin the Landmark Conference regular season.
