TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College junior sprinter/hurdler John Spirk has been named the Landmark Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for his performance this past Saturday.
Spirk finished third in the 60-meter hurdles at the Lehigh University Fast Times Before Finals meet in Rauch Fieldhouse with a personal-best time of 8.41 seconds, which is currently tied for 15th in the nation on the Track & Field Results Reporting System list. Spirk had qualified for the finals with the fifth fastest preliminary time of 8.44 seconds. He also placed 12th in the 200-meter dash with another PR time of 23.52 seconds.
"John has been battling a little bit of a leg injury the last month so we held him out last week to be cautious," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann. "His fitness and technical workouts have been looking incredible, which was reflected in how he did on Saturday. Even with the hiccup and only a few weeks of formal practice, he's already ahead of last year. We've talked about NCAAs being a serious goal for him this year, and I think his opener showed that's a real possibility. Technically speaking, he'd be in if the season ended today."
The Hounds are scheduled to resume their 2017-18 indoor season on Friday, January 20 in the Collegeville Classic hosted by Ursinus College.
