Greyhounds Sit in First Place After Opening Day of Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's track & field team is in first place after the opening day of competition Saturday at the 2018 Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships being hosted by Elizabethtown College.

The Greyhounds are in first place by 29 points over the host Blue Jays with Moravian scoring 78 points on the first day of action to 49 for Elizabethtown. The Blue and Grey had one individual title on Saturday.

Junior Scott Goodwin won his second straight conference title in the pole vault and the Greyhounds' first individual title in the 2018 meet with a height of 4.81 meters (15-9.25). Senior Preston Weidner was fourth at a height of 3.80 meters (12-5.5) while freshman John Stires was sixth at 3.50 meters (11-5.75).

Sophomore Greg Jaindl was the runner-up in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.4, and Moravian had two other score points in the race with junior Devon Harris finishing third in 4:00.40 and senior Andrew Mitchell in fifth place in 4:02.70. Sophomore Gavin Kemery finished fifth in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 33:46.08 in the first event of the day for Moravian.

Freshman Michael Elo was the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 6.40 meters (21-0) while junior Brian Stock was a spot back with a distance of 6.34 meters (20-9.75).

Sophomore Ryan Harper finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.23 meters (145-1) while junior Tyler Bergsma was fourth with a distance of 42.10 meters (138-1). Junior Jon Anthony placed third in the discus with a toss of 40.04 meters (131-4) while freshman Derek Scott was sixth at 38.05 meters (124-10) and freshman Shane Mastro took eight with a mark of 36.63 meters (120-2) to earn points for Moravian.

In the preliminaries, freshman Zion Howard had the fastest qualifying time in the 100-meter dash of 10.89 seconds, and he will be joined by senior Eric Morton, who ran a time of 11.45 seconds, and Elo, who ran 11.59 seconds. Howard also had the top qualifying time in the 200-meter dash in 21.75 seconds, and he'll be joined in the finals by freshman Sean McFarland, who had a time of 22.82 seconds.

Junior John Spirk recorded the top preliminary time in the 110-meter high hurdles at 14.80 seconds, and he will be joined in the finals by junior Woodrow Battle, who ran a time of 16.72 seconds.

The second day of the conference championships is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 5 at Elizabethtown.
