Baseball Falls to Muhlenberg, 6-5, in 10 Innings

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team had a one-run lead on three different occasions but the Greyhounds were unable to hold on, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 6-5, in ten innings at Cedarcreek Field Wednesday in a game that saw rain and snow falling as the teams finished their warm-ups.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Colin Case reached on an error to start the game and moved to third on a single to right field by junior second baseman Daniel Seitzinger and another Muhlenberg error. After sophomore outfielder Matt Hanson was hit by a pitch, sophomore third baseman Ryan Luke connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field scoring Case.

The Mules tied the game in the bottom half of the second inning on an RBI single by junior catcher Brett Rosen. Muhlenberg added two more runs in the home portion of the third inning to build a 3-1 lead. Senior outfielder John Muha doubled with one out and scored on an RBI triple by sophomore outfielder Jimmy Cody. Cody scored on an RBI ground out by junior first baseman Nick Kennedy.

Moravian retook the lead with three runs on the top of the fifth inning for a 4-3 advantage. Seitzinger led off the inning with single, and Luke added a single with one out. Junior outfielder Joseph Connell followed with a two-RBI triple, scoring Seitzinger and Luke. Connell put the Greyhounds ahead on an RBI ground out from freshman first baseman Charles Savite.

The Mules tied the game again at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double from Rosen.

The Greyhounds pushed a run across the plate in the top half of the ninth inning for a 5-4 lead. Case and Seitzinger drew walks to start the inning, and Case eventually scored the go ahead run on an RBI sacrifice fly by Luke.

Muhlenberg answered again in the bottom half of the ninth to tie the game for a third time at 5-5 after an RBI single by Muha to force extra innings.

Moravian loaded the bases in the top of the tenth inning with a single by Savite and freshman outfielder Cameron Leon and Case being hit by pitches. However, the Greyhounds were unable to get a runner home to retake the lead.

The Mules also loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth inning on a single by Cody, and error and a walk before Cody scored the winning run on another Moravian error.

Muhlenberg had a 10-8 edge in hits in the game with Rosen going three-for-four. Muha and Cody were each two-for-five for the Mules while senior outfielder Joseph Villa was two-for-four. Luke was two-for-three with a pair of RBIs to lead the Greyhounds at the plate while Seitzinger went two-for-five.

The Greyhounds used ten pitchers in the game, a set rotation of one per inning with junior Robert Solano taking the loss after the unearned run in the tenth.

The Mules used four pitchers with senior Ryan Rechten picking up the victory for his work in the tenth inning.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, March 16th when the Greyhounds open their 2013 Landmark Conference season with a doubleheader with The Catholic University of America beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
