Baseball Falls to Misercordia

DALLAS, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team dropped a 9-4 non-conference contest at Misericordia University Thursday.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when freshman outfielder Chris Boroch scored on a throwing error on a double steal attempt. Misericordia made the lead 3-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI sacrifice fly senior designated hitter Steve Sulcoski and another Moravian error.

The Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to a run, 3-2. Freshman outfielder Jimmy McCarthy led off with a double, and he scored on a steal of home after an infield single by sophomore shortstop Colin Case. Case eventually scored on an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Ryan Luke.

The Cougars answered back in the bottom half of the sixth with four runs to push their lead to 7-2. Boroch had an RBI single in the inning while Sulcoski had a two-RBI single and freshman outfielder Kyle Lindsay had an RBI single.

Misericordia score a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Paul Shepherd to make the lead 8-2.

Moravian added two runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the score to 8-4. Luke had an RBI ground out to score sophomore outfielder Matt Hanson, who had singled, while junior outfielder Joseph Connell added an RBI single to score freshman first baseman Charles Savite, who had also singled.

The Cougars finished off the scoring in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from Sulcoski.

Misericordia had a 14-12 edge in hits in the game with Sulcoski and Shepherd each went three-for-four. Lindsay and senior third baseman Andrew Tressa were both two-for-four while junior shortstop Ryan Cacchioli was two-for-five. McCarthy led the Greyhounds at the plate with a three-for-five performance while Connell was two-for-four and Case was two-for-five.

Moravian freshman pitcher Anthony Zaloga took the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing five runs, just two earned, on seven hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of action. Freshman Brett Wagner tossed 1 2/3 innings with three runs on five hits and a walk while junior Ben Hammel pitched the final inning with a run on two hits.

Misericordia also used three pitchers in the game with senior Matt Karabin earning the victory after tossing seven innings with eight hits, two runs and a walk allowed to go with three strikeouts.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, April 21st when the squad hosts DeSales University in a non-conference game that will be played at Limeport Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m.
