Moravian Falls in Final Miniutes to Conference Foe Susquehanna

The Susquehanna University field hockey team snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal by sophomore midfielder/forward Danielle Waleko in the 68th minute to give the Crusaders a 2-1 Landmark Conference win over Moravian College Monday evening in Selinsgrove in a match that began on Saturday in Bethlehem.

Moravian started the match with a chance to clinch the first-ever postseason berth with win and a loss by The University of Scranton; however, Scranton defeated Juniata College, 3-1, earlier on Monday to eliminate the Greyhounds postseason possibilities.

The contest began on Saturday, October 29th at Betty Prince Field in Bethlehem but was suspended after just 12:38 of action due to the heavy, wet snow that began to blank the field. In the opening action, the Greyhounds had two shots on goal while the Crusaders had one shot. The schools were going to attempt to continue the match on Sunday at Liberty High School but do to a power outage and the field unable to be plowed; the contest was moved to Selinsgrove Monday evening.

When the match resumed Monday evening in Selinsgrove, the teams would finish the first half scoreless. Susquehanna put three shots on goal including two by senior midfielder/forward Anna Spisak while freshman midfielder Catherine Duffin put two shots on goal for the Greyhounds.

The Crusaders would take a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute when junior midfielder Tiffany Collins scored her second goal of the season off of a pass from freshman forward Brodie Ercole.

Moravian needed just over five minutes to tie the match at 1-1 when junior forward Briana Van Buskirk netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season after a penalty corner started by sophomore midfielder Chelsea Grotyohann. The goal was also Van Buskirk's 20th career goal, just the 11th player in school history to reach 20 career goals.

Susquehanna moved back in front with 2:09 left to play when Waleko scored her fourth goal of the season off of a penalty corner by junior midfielder Ally Bradley.

The Greyhounds would get their seventh penalty corner of the match with five seconds remaining but Van Buskirk's final shot sailed wide to end the contest.

The Crusaders finished the match with a 16-7 advantage in shots including 9-5 on goal, and Susquehanna also had a 17-7 edge in penalty corners. Greyhounds' sophomore goalie Andrea Eck made seven saves while senior goalie Erin Ferguson had four saves for the Crusaders.
