No. 24 Moravian Splits on Opening Day at Spring Games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The No. 24 Moravian College softball team began the 2019 season with split of two contests at the Spring Games played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida as the Greyhounds defeated Thiel College, 14-0 in five innings to start the day before falling to John Carroll (Ohio) University, 3-0.

In the opener versus Thiel, the Greyhounds had 12 hits led by sophomore catcher Brooke Wehr going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Senior designated player Kat Spilman and junior first baseman Lauren Goetz were both 2-for-4 with Spilman adding an RBI and a double while Goetz connected on a grand slam. Senior third baseman Madison Shaneberger added three RBIs in the contest.

Freshman Alexandria Scheeler and sophomore Meghan Bauer combined on a three-hit shutout over Thiel. Scheeler earned the victory in her first career start with three hits and a walk to go along with two strikeouts in four innings of work in the circle while Bauer registered on strikeout in an inning of action.

The Hounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning when Shaneberger drew a bases loaded walk before Goetz ripped her grand slam to right center field. It was the fourth home run of Goetz's career.

Moravian added two runs in the second inning on a two-RBI single from Shaneberger while the Blue and Grey plated five runs in the top of the third. Freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy had an RBI single to start the scoring while sophomore left fielder Shannon Brogan hit an RBI sacrifice fly. Spilman followed with an RBI single before the final two runs of the frame scored on an error.

The Greyhounds finished off the scoring against Thiel with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI pinch hit single by freshman Taylor Sanders and an RBI single from freshman pinch hitter Nicole Cassano.

Moravian had just five hits against John Carroll with Wehr going 2-for-4.

Junior Paige Lesher tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing three runs, just one earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters.

The Blue Streaks scored all three of their runs in the top of the third inning.

The Hounds will return to action on Monday, March 4 with two more contests at the Spring Games with matchups against Emmanuel (Mass.) College at 9:00 a.m. and Monmouth (Ill) College at 11:30 a.m.
