BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 10 Moravian College softball squad scored a total of 21 runs while sweeping visiting Eastern University, 12-0 and 9-1 in five innings, in non-conference action at Blue & Grey Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds, now 28-4 this spring, had 14 hits in the opener with six different players each collecting two hits. Sophomore catcher Brooke Wehr was 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs and her seventh home run of the season while sophomore designated player Shannon Brogan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two triples. Senior third baseman Madison Shaneberger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while sophomore shortstop Maddisen Bieber was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. Junior right fielder Emily Stanilious and senior second baseman Kaela Kane were both 2-for-3.
Sophomore Meghan Bauer tossed her second shutout of the season as she scattered four hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts as she improved to 3-1 on the year in the circle.
Moravian, batting as the visitor with the games being moved to Bethlehem due to construction at Eastern, opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning when Wehr reached on an error and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Kat Spilman.
The Hounds added a run in the top of the third when Wehr drew a leadoff walk and raced home on an RBI triple to right field by Brogan. The Blue and Grey pushed the lead to 3-0 with a run in the third frame when Bieber led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Kane.
The Greyhounds made it a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth with two more runs. Stanilious connected on a leadoff double and scored on Brogan's second triple of the game, this one down the right field line. Freshman first baseman Alexandria Scheeler connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Brogan.
Moravian's bats erupted for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning. Spilman started the frame with a single and she scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Bieber. Shaneberger ripped a two-RBI double to score Bieber and Scheeler while freshman pinch hitter Briana DiCandeloro hit an RBI single as Shaneberger scored. Wehr followed with a three-run homer to right field, her 19th career home run, to finish off the scoring.
The Hounds collected another 11 hits in the second game with Bieber and Kane each going 2-for-2 and scoring twice. Freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy was also 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs while Scheeler had a 2-for-3 game.
Junior Paige Lesher improved to 14-1 in the circle as she allowed an unearned run on six hits to go with a strikeout in the contest.
The Blue and Grey jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Scheeler doubled with one out and came across the plate with the first run of the game on a misplayed ball after a single by Bieber. Cassidy would hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded as Bieber and Shaneberger scored while Wehr followed with an RBI single that scored Kane as Wehr became the 48th player in program history to reach 100 career hits. Stanilious finished off the inning with an RBI single that scored Wehr.
Moravian tacked on two more runs in the top of the third when Kane hit an RBI triple to score Bieber, who had walked, before Kane raced home on a wild pitch.
The Eagles would get a run in the bottom of the third inning to make it 8-1.
The Greyhounds scored another run in the top of the fourth when Spilman reached on an error, stole second base and raced home on an infield RBI single by Scheeler. The victory was the squad's 13th of the spring that ended early by the NCAA eight-run rule.
The Hounds are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, April 18 in a non-conference doubleheader at Ursinus College beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Collegeville.
