CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian College softball team won its final two contests in the Spring Games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida Friday with a 10-2, five-inning victory over Alvernia University to start the before concluding the trip with a 6-2 triumph over Defiance (Ohio) College.
The Hounds, who head back to Bethlehem with a 7-3 overall record, had 10 hits against Alvernia with senior left fielder Kat Spilman going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Freshman pitcher Alexandria Scheeler was 2-for-4 while sophomore designated player Shannon Brogan drove in four runs including two on a home run.
Scheeler improved to 3-0 in the circle as she allowed a pair of runs on eight hits against the Wolves.
Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore catcher Brooke Wehr led off the game with a single and scored on an RBI single off of Spilman's bat.
Alvernia would push a run across the plate in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at 1-1.
The Greyhounds had their seventh five-plus run inning of the season in the top of the fourth when they scored seven times. Senior third baseman Madison Shaneberger led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from junior first baseman Lauren Goetz. Freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy had a two RBI double to score Goetz and sophomore shortstop Maddisen Bieber, and Cassidy eventually raced home on a wild pitch. Brogan reached on an error that scored two more runs while Shaneberger reached on another error in her second at-bat of the inning as Brogan crossed the plate.
Moravian added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to reach the NCAA's eight-run rule while the Wolves only scored once in the bottom of the fifth. The Blue and Grey scored with two outs as Spilman connected on a single and Brogan followed with her first homer of the season and third of her career to finish the scoring.
The Greyhounds knocked out nine hits versus Defiance with Bieber going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Spilman was 2-for-4 in the victory while Shaneberger had a hit in the third inning to become the 46th player in program history to reach 100 career hits.
Junior Paige Lesher improved 4-1 in the circle this spring as she allowed a pair of runs on six hits and a walk to go with two strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, and Defiance added a run in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 edge.
The Blue and Grey would plate four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to move in front 4-2. Moravian loaded the bases on hits by Spilman and Brogan and an error on a ball hit by Scheeler. Spilman would be out at the plate on a fielder's choice hit by Shaneberger and after another out, Bieber connected on a two-RBI single to score Brogan and Scheeler. Cassidy then reached on another error as Shaneberger and Bieber raced home.
The Hounds added a run in the home half of the fifth when Spilman singled with one out and scored on an RBI triple from Scheeler to make it 5-2.
Moravian scored another run in the sixth frame for a 6-2 advantage. Bieber led off with a single and would come in from third on an RBI single by junior right fielder Emily Stanilious.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 14 when the squad begins its 2019 home slate with a non-conference doubleheader versus Gwynedd Mercy University starting at 3:00 p.m. at Blue & Grey Field in Bethlehem.
