No. 11 Moravian Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. --- The No. 11 Moravian College softball team dropped the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader at Ursinus College, 2-0, before winning the nightcap, 5-4, to earn a split with the host Bears Thursday afternoon.

The Greyhounds, now 29-5 on the year, had six hits in the opener with sophomore shortstop Maddisen Bieber going 2-for-3 and sophomore catcher Brooke Wehr going 2-for-4.

Freshman Alexandria Scheeler took the loss in the circle as she allowed two runs on eight hits to go with a pair of strikeouts in the complete game.

The Bears scored once in the third inning and once in the sixth for the only two runs of the contest.

The second game saw the Blue and Grey knock out eight hits with sophomore right fielder Shannon Brogan going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.

Junior Paige Lesher improved to 15-1 in the circle as she allowed four runs, just one earned on four hits in 4.2 innings of action. Sophomore Meghan Bauer earned her second save of the season with two hits, a walk and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief action.

The Hounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two. Senior left fielder Julia DeMarco connected on a one-out triple to right center, and she raced home on an RBI single to center from senior designated player Kat Spilman. Brogan followed with an RBI double to right center as Spilman scored from first base.

Moravian added three runs in the top of the fifth for a 5-0 edge. Freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy was hit by a pitch to start the frame while Wehr hit a single. After a sacrifice bunt by DeMarco, Spilman drew a walk to load the bases. Brogan dropped a single down the right field ling to bring in Cassidy while Scheeler had an RBI ground out to score Wehr. Bieber finished off the inning with an RBI single to left field as Spilman crossed the plate.

Ursinus would score four times in the bottom of the fifth frame to make it a one-run game before Bauer came in an closed the door.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 20 in a non-conference doubleheader versus the College of Staten Island beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Blue & Grey Field in Bethlehem.
