No. 24 Hounds Score 22 Runs in Landmark Conference Sweep at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The No. 24 Moravian College softball team continued its offensive power with a pair of six-inning Landmark Conference victories at Susquehanna University Saturday afternoon, winning 11-3 and 11-1 with a total of 33 hits on the afternoon.

The Greyhounds, who are now 17-3 overall and 6-0 in Landmark Conference action after running their winning streak to 12 games with their fifth straight doubleheader sweep, had 19 hits in the opener led by sophomore catcher Brooke Wehr, who was 4-for-4 with four runs, two RBIs, two doubles, a triple and her fifth home run of the season. Sophomores designated player Shannon Brogan and shortstop Maddisen Bieber were both 3-for-4 with Bieber connecting on two doubles and Brogan driving in two runs with a double. Senior left fielder Kat Spilman went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while junior right fielder Emily Stanilious was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and freshman pitcher Alexandria Scheeler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Scheeler improved to 7-0 in the circle as she allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts.

The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener as Wehr led off the game with a triple and scored on a two-out RBI single from Brogan.

The Blue and Grey scored five times in the top of the second frame for a 6-0 lead. Freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy hit a two-out double and raced home on an RBI double from Wehr. Stanilious followed with an RBI single while Spilman connected on an RBI single. Brogan ripped an RBI double while Scheeler drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.

Moravian tacked on two more runs in the top of the third for an 8-0 advantage. Wehr started things off with a one-out single, and she scored on an RBI single from Stanilious. Scheeler would eventually bring in Stanilious with a bases loaded RBI ground out.

The River Hawks scored their three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Hounds edge to 8-3.

The Blue and Grey scored twice in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles by Bieber and junior first baseman Lauren Goetz and an RBI single from Spilman.

Moravian finished off the scoring with a run in the top of the sixth on Wehr's solo home run to left field for the NCAA eight-run rule.

The Greyhounds knocked out 14 hits in the second game with Bieber going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Scheeler and Goetz were each 2-for-3 with Goetz connecting on a home run and adding three RBIs. Wehr and Stanilious were both 2-for-4 in the game.

Junior Paige Lesher improved to 9-1 in the circle as she allowed just one run on six hits to go with four strikeouts.

The Blue and Grey jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Scheeler doubled with one out and scored on an RBI double from Bieber. Cassidy had an RBI single to bring in senior third baseman Madison Shaneberger. Wehr would add a two-RBI double while Stanilious had an RBI ground out to finish off the inning.

Susquehanna scored its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the second frame.

Moravian pushed the lead to 8-1 with three runs in the third inning. Scheeler and Bieber hit singles before Goetz connected on her team-leading sixth home run of the season.

The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to get to the NCAA run rule for the tenth time in 20 games this season. Wehr led off with a double for her sixth extra base hit of the afternoon, and she scored on an RBI double by Brogan. Shaneberger finished off the afternoon with a two-RBI triple.

The Hounds are slated to return to action on Tuesday, April 2 in a non-conference doubleheader at DeSales University beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Center Valley.
